HEAD SYSTEMS

Open all|Close all

HOW DO I MAINTAIN AND CLEAN MY HELMET?
It is important to routinely conduct a visual inspection of all head system components before and after each use. The visual inspection helps to identify wear and tear of fabric material or sewn components and cracks, scratches, holes, or deformation. Helmets and head subsystem components that have been damaged by impact or general wear must be replaced as soon as possible as they will no longer offer the same level of protection.

Clean your helmet shell, chinstrap, suspension system from dust and dirt with mild soap and water on a regular basis. Use a soft brush to clean delicate parts. Allow time to air dry your equipment after cleaning. After your head subsystem has been exposed to water, rain, or other wet conditions, allow the system to dry in open air (under cover) before storage.
ARE THE CAIMAN VISORS AND MANDIBLE GUARDS INTERCHANGEABLE BETWEEN THE CAIMAN BUMP, CAIMAN HYBRID, AND CAIMAN BALLISTIC HELMETS?
Yes
WHICH NVG MOUNTS IS THE CAIMAN NVG ARM VISOR COMPATIBLE WITH?
The Caiman NVG Arm Visor attaches to most NVG mounts that accept a dove-tail interface.
CAN THE M50 GAS MASK BE WORN WITH THE BATLSKIN HEAD PROTECTION SYSTEM?
When wearing an ACH helmet fitted with Galvion’s Front Mount, it is possible to wear the M50 CBRN mask with the Visor closed. The Mandible Guard is not designed to be worn with the CBRN mask in use.
ARE THE BATLSKIN HEAD PROTECTION SYSTEMS COMPATIBLE WITH NVGS?
Yes. The Batlskin Front Mount receiver component accommodates the Batlskin Visor as well as widely used NVGs, such as the PVS-7 and PVS-14. If using other types of NVGs, such as ENVG III NVGs, the receiver component can be swapped for the upgradable receiver that is included with these NVGs. When NVGs are worn, we recommend using clear ballistic eye protection.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BATLSKIN VIPER AND CAIMAN HEAD SYSTEM?
The difference between these product families comes down largely to shell shape, system architecture and design, and the associated head system components tailored to the make of each. Viper is based on the U.S. Army ACH-style helmet, while the Caiman System is a scalable, lightweight solution—developed for and in collaboration with Special Operations Forces (SOF) users—designed to integrate with up-armor ballistic appliques. To find out more, and to examine the nuances within and between these head systems, view the sales sheets and product summaries for each.
ARE THE ARC RAILS COMPATIBLE WITH GALVION BATLSKIN HELMETS?
Galvion's High Cut Helmets accommodate the Batlskin Interlocking and Standalone Long Rails that allow for easy installation of cameras, flashlight, and other head borne accessories onto helmets. Galvion also has designed a rail-ready cut of the ACH-shaped helmet that is meant to work with current ARC rail systems available upon request. Please contact Customer Care.
ARE CAIMAN HEAD SYSTEM COMPONENTS ONLY COMPATIBLE WITH CAIMAN HELMETS? ARE VIPER HEAD SYSTEM COMPONENTS COMPATIBLE WITH ALL VIPER HELMETS? ARE COBRA HEAD SYSTEM COMPONENTS ONLY COMPATIBLE WITH THE COBRA HELMET?
The Batlskin Caiman Head System components—both Mandible Guards and both Visors—have been designed to work with Galvion’s Caiman Bump Helmet System, Caiman Hybrid Helmet System, and Caiman Ballistic Helmet System. The Caiman Applique is designed to work with the Caiman Hybrid Helmet System.

The Batlskin Viper Head System components—Front Mount, Mandible Guards, Visor, and side rails—have been designed to work with:
  • Batlskin Viper P4 Helmets
  • Batlskin Viper A3 Helmets
  • Official standard issue ACH helmets
The Batlskin Cobra Head System components—Front Mount, Mandible Guard, side rails, and Visor—have been designed to fit the Batlskin Cobra P2 Helmet.

HEAD SYSTEMS PROTECTION

Open all|Close all

DO I LOSE PROTECTION WITH A LIGHTER HELMET?
Protection is always foremost in our minds when we engineer our head protection systems. However, we are very aware that head protection is not an entirely linear proposition: helmets must be very strong but they also need to be streamlined for fast-moving operations. Galvion works with advanced materials and cutting-edge manufacturing processes to optimize the balance between weight and superior ballistic protection. Batlskin head systems components—including the Mandible Guard, helmet shell, and Visor—provide a weight versus protection ratio that is commensurate with U.S. Army ballistic requirements and the operational realities of today's battlefield.
DOES THE BATLSKIN HEAD PROTECTION SYSTEM PROTECT AGAINST BLUNT FORCE, BLAST, AND BALLISTIC THREATS?
Yes. To help reduce brain injuries, Batlskin Caiman, Batlskin Viper, and Batlskin Cobra head systems, have been designed to mitigate ballistic threats, but also to protect against blast waves, deflecting and absorbing energy. The Mandible Guards also offer blunt force and blast fragmentation protection for the lower face and jaw. Injury models include both ballistic and non-ballistic injuries, so the Batlskin Head Protection Systems provide additional protection against blunt impact and blast force to the face and jaw, such as those cause by collision with vehicle interiors and weapons. The Caiman Hybrid Helmet System provides ballistic protection with the addition of the Caiman Armor Applique. Both the Caiman Hybrid Helmet System and the Caiman Bump Helmet System meet or exceed advanced combat helmet (ACH) standards for impact protection.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CAIMAN BUMP HELMET AND THE CAIMAN HYBRID HELMET?
The Caiman Bump Helmet has a reinforced polymer shell whereas the Caiman Hybrid Helmet has a carbon fiber shell. As a result, the Caiman Bump Helmet is slightly lighter in weight, whereas the Caiman Hybrid Helmet provides a bit more protection against blunt force impacts—though they both meet or exceed advanced combat helmet (ACH) standards for impact protection.
HOW DOES THE BALLISTIC APPLIQUE ATTACH TO THE CAIMAN HYBRID HELMET?
The two-piece Ballistic Applique attaches to the Caiman Hybrid Helmet with Velcro hook and loop.
WHEN WEARING THE BATLSKIN HEAD PROTECTION SYSTEM, WILL THE VISOR FOG?
The Batlskin Visors have an anti-fog coating on the inside of the lens. In severe environments, the Visor can be articulated to the ‘vent’ position to further reduce fogging. In an emergency, the Ballistic Visor can also be quickly removed.
HOW BREATHABLE ARE BATLSKIN HEAD PROTECTION SYSTEMS?
Unlike a gas mask, the bottom of the Batlskin Mandible Guard has an opening to ensure ventilation and proper air circulation. In severe environments, the Visor can be articulated to the ‘vent’ or ‘up’ positions to increase ventilation. The Batlskin Head Protection Systems were designed with thermal mitigation in mind. Each component of the system is modular and can be utilized in depending on environmental conditions and situational threat level. For example, for extra ventilation, you can wear the Visor without the Mandible Guard.
WHEN WEARING THE BATLSKIN HEAD PROTECTION SYSTEM, HOW EASILY CAN YOU COMMUNICATE WITH OTHERS; ARE FACE-TO-FACE CONVERSATIONS CLEAR? CAN I USE COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT?
The Batlskin Head Protection System has been specifically designed for use with over-the-ear communication headsets. The Mandible Guard provides sufficient clearance for communication headsets, boom microphones as well as the headset earpiece. The Mandible Guard can easily be tilted downwards by varying degrees allowing for improved sight capabilities, eating, and drinking.
HOW WIDE IS THE FIELD-OF-VIEW WHEN WEARING THE BATLSKIN HEAD PROTECTION SYSTEM?
The optically correct ballistic Batlskin Visor provides the same field-of-view as the ACH helmet and is manufactured to ensure distortion-free vision across the whole panoramic surface of the lens. When the Mandible Guard is in use, the field-of-view is comparable to that of ballistic goggles. If additional field-of-view is required, the Mandible Guard can be easily removed.
HOW DO YOU USE WEAPONS WITH THE BATLSKIN HEAD PROTECTION SYSTEM? CAN YOU ACHIEVE A PROPER CHEEK WELD WHILE SIGHTING WEAPONS?
The Batlskin Head Protection System is intended to be used with current weapon optics. Most standard red dot, holographic sights and scopes are capable of being used with this system. For use during limited visibility operations, standard IR lasers can be utilized without a cheek-to-stock weld. As a contingency, the ballistic mandible is easily removed for use with traditional iron sights.

POWER SAFETY

Open all|Close all

IF THE BATTERY IS NOT BEING USED, HOW FREQUENTLY DO I HAVE TO CHARGE IT?
If the Nerv Centr SharePack will not be used for a week or longer, it must be fully charged and put into shutdown mode. Otherwise, the Nerv Centr SharePack will deteriorate and last only a few months as opposed to a few years. Failing to charge and shut down will leave the Nerv Centr SharePack consuming a small but continuous amount of current which can drain cells to a point where they cannot recover. If the Nerv Centr SoloPack is not being used, simply charge the battery to 50% and leave in an ambient environment. It is recommended to perform maintenance recharges back to 50% at regular intervals, two or three times a year, to maintain the battery in optimal condition. Otherwise, its shelf life is approximately 3 years.
HOW SHOULD I STORE THESE BATTERIES?
The batteries should be stored at 50% state-of-charge, placed into shutdown mode (no equipment or cables connected), and at an ambient temperature of 25°C. The shelf life under these conditions is 3 years. Please note that the Nerv Centr SharePack will need occasional recharging back up to 50%.
CAN I STORE A DEPLETED BATTERY PACK FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME WITHOUT CAUSING DAMAGE?
With smart batteries like the Nerv Centr SharePack and SoloPack, if left unattended for a month after complete depletion, the lithium-ion cells may be permanently damaged, rendering them unsalvageable.
HOW DEEPLY CAN I DISCHARGE THE NERV CENTR SHAREPACK WITHOUT FAILURE?
The battery can be depleted down to zero percent. As a safety mechanism, the software will display an 'Apply Charger' message when getting critically low, informing the user to recharge the Nerv Centr SharePack. If the battery is not charged after this indicator appears, the software will internally shut-down the device and it will only awaken once connected to a charger. This automatic internal shut-down protects the lithium-ion cells.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I USE MY BATTERY OUTSIDE OF THE OPERATING TEMPERATURE RANGE?
The Nerv Centr SoloPack and Nerv Centr SharePack will disable charging and discharging through the battery cell stack when the internal temperature reaches 70°C ± 5°C. It will resume normal operation when the internal temperature reaches 50°C ± 5°C. Charging and discharging through the battery cell stack will be permanently disabled should the internal temperature exceed 93°C ± 5°C.
WHAT HAPPENS IF A NERV CENTR SOLOPACK OR NERV CENTR SHAREPACK IS HIT BY A ROUND OR SHRAPNEL?
Nerv Centr battery systems offer the same level of safety as other man worn batteries currently in use by the U.S. Military. The Nerv Centr SoloPack and Nerv Centr SharePack will behave in a similar manner to most standard military batteries such as the BB-2590 or LI-145; they may heat up or, in extreme situations, could conceivably catch fire if hit by a round or shrapnel. Galvion continues to investigate operationally safe battery systems.
IS THERE A POTENTIAL TO DAMAGE MY EQUIPMENT IF I DON'T SET THE VOLTAGE CORRECTLY?
It is important that the ports are set in accordance with the voltage required by the piece of equipment being powered. Otherwise, there is a possibility that the equipment could be damaged. Please pay special attention when setting the voltage.
HOW DO I DISPOSE OF THE BATTERY?
Similar to one-time use batteries and cell phone batteries, the Nerv Centr SoloPack and Nerv Centr SharePack can be disposed of in commonly used battery disposal boxes. Please contact your local battery recycling program to determine your nearest disposal location.
ARE THERE ANY REGULATIONS FOR SHIPPING THESE BATTERIES?
Yes, please call your local shipping station to determine and verify any restrictions or regulations related to shipping these batteries. The Nerv Centr SoloPack and Nerv Centr SharePack have passed the UN/DOT 38.3 Certification but regulations for shipping and transporting lithium-ion products have changed recently and vary by size and power output. For more information, here are several useful references: IATA (International Air Transport Association), FedEx, UPS, TNT, DHL. Watt-hour (capacity) information is listed on the front of your battery.
CAN I TAKE THESE BATTERIES ON A COMMERCIAL AIRLINE?
It is incumbent upon travelers to verify with airlines whether restrictions have changed prior to boarding, and to seek approval for carrying lithium-ion batteries in their carry-on luggage. Due to frequent changes in lithium-ion battery regulations, please contact your airline for information. Restrictions and regulations apply depending on the airline, and vary based on the power output of the device. Watt-hour (capacity) information is listed on the front of your Nerv Centr SoloPack and Nerv Centr SharePack. Both the Nerv Centr SoloPack and Nerv Centr SharePack have passed the UN/DOT 38.3 Safety Certification.
WILL THE NERV CENTR SOLOPACK AND NERV CENTR SHAREPACK FUNCTION UNDERWATER?
The Nerv Centr SoloPack and Nerv Centr SharePack are designed to meet the MIL-STD-810G Immersion - Method 512.6 Procedure I, which is meant for equipment that might get inadvertently immersed (i.e. accidentally dropped in a stream) but are not currently designed to operate underwater.
MY NERV CENTR SQUAD POWER MANAGER (SPM-622) KEEPS REPORTING AN OVER (OR UNDER) VOLTAGE ERROR. WHAT’S WRONG?
This error indicates that a port on the Nerv Centr Squad Power Manager (SPM-622) has detected a voltage that is outside the normal operating range of the connected device and has disconnected the port to protect that device and/or the power manager. Though rare, this is the most common error with the Squad Power Manager (SPM-622). First, try unplugging all devices and power sources from the Squad Power Manager, then reconnecting them.

If the problem persists you may need to return the device to Galvion for repair. Please visit our Warranty page for more information on our Nerv Centr warranty.

I HAVE LOST MY INSTRUCTION MANUAL. CAN I ACCESS INSTRUCTIONS ONLINE?
The instruction manual for the Nerv Centr SoloPack and Nerv Centr SharePack can be accessed by scanning the code on the back of the battery using your smartphone device.
HOW LONG WILL MY BATTERY LAST?
Nerv Centr SharePack is rated for 152Wh and the Nerv Centr SoloPack for 96Wh. The amount of runtime depends largely on what and how equipment will be used. When fully charged, if powering equipment that draws one watt continuously, you can expect to get 150 hours (6.6 days) of runtime from the Nerv Centr SharePack, and 100 hour (4.4 days) with the Nerv Centr SoloPack. Most handheld radios will require 2-3 watts when not transmitting. This means you can expect approximately 2-3 days of runtime (this is reduced when transmitting). Larger radios will require much more power (10-20W) which reduces runtime to a couple of hours. The best indication of runtime is displayed on the Nerv Centr SoloPack's state-of-charge display or the Nerv Centr SharePack's main screen and this will be your best indication of the duration of battery life.
WHAT IS THE OPERATING TEMPERATURE RANGE OF NERV CENTR PRODUCTS?
The Nerv Centr SoloPack and Nerv Centr SharePack are designed to operate in temperatures of -32°C to +55°C.
HOW WILL I KNOW IF MY BATTERY IS DEAD?
A 'Servicing Required' error message will appear, indicating that the Nerv Centr SharePack should be returned to the manufacturer for servicing.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE USB CABLE IS DISCONNECTED WHILE UPDATING THE NERV CENTR SHAREPACK'S FIRMWARE?
It is crucial that the user responsible for updating the device ensures that it is properly connected to the PC and that once updating commences, the cable does not become disconnected. Disconnecting a cable during an update may render the Nerv Centr SharePack unusable, requiring the battery to be returned to Galvion for servicing.
HOW MANY NERV CENTR SHAREPACKS CAN I UPDATE AT ONCE?
There is no limit to the number of Nerv Centr SharePacks that can be updated at the same time—as many as you have USB ports to support. The software will recognize these connected devices and update them one after the other.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I RECHARGE MY NERV CENTR SOLOPACK AND NERV CENTR SHAREPACK?
The batteries should be recharged after each use to prolong life. Unlike the internal chemistry of other battery types, lithium-ion batteries will never 'crystallize' or develop a 'memory'. They can be recharged at any state-of-charge and will only show signs of lost capacity after several thousand cycles.
WHAT IS DATA LOGGING AND HOW DO I USE IT?
Data logging is the ability of the Nerv Centr Squad Power Manager (SPM-622) to periodically record the amount of power being used by each attached device, as well as the distribution of power used throughout a mission. This can be useful in determining how much power is required during a mission for the logistics of future missions. To access, display, and manipulate the stored data, you must upload the data log from the power manager to a USB-connected PC; this is accomplished by using the software provided—the software CD included with the Squad Power Manager (SPM-622) kit provides further instructions for using the data log feature of the Squad Power Manager (SPM-622). You will also need a USB to SPM cable.
MY NERV CENTR PRODUCT ISN’T WORKING. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
Please contact Customer Care at customercare@galvion.com. If possible, please have the Nerv Centr product with you when you contact us, so we can help determine what the problem is.
MY NERV CENTR SQUAD POWER MANAGER (SPM-622) ISN’T POWERING UP. WHAT SHOULD I DO?
The Nerv Centr Squad Power Manager (SPM-622) requires an external power source, such as a battery, AC power supply, solar or wind power source, or fuel cell power. If an external power source is present, ensure that the source is working properly—that is, check that the battery isn’t completely drained, that the AC power supply is plugged in and functional, that there is adequate sun on the solar panel (no power available at night), that the wind turbine is spinning, or that the fuel cell is providing power.

If you have verified that a power source is functional and connected to the Nerv Centr Squad Power Manager (SPM-622), and the power manager does not turn on, you may need to return the power manager to Galvion for repair. Please visit our Warranty page for more information on our Nerv Centr warranty.
I JUST RECEIVED A NERV CENTR SQUAD POWER MANAGER (SPM-622), BUT I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY TRAINING ON HOW TO USE THIS DEVICE. WHERE SHOULD I BEGIN?
The Nerv Centr Squad Power Manager (SPM-622) was designed to be an intuitive power management device. You can’t break it by plugging something into the wrong port. Still, each Squad Power Manager (SPM-622) comes with a Quick Start Guide that provides ample information for setting up and using your device. For more detailed information, a larger user manual should be available to you through your command.
  • Ports 3 and 4 are used for gathering power from external sources—like an AC power supply, solar, wind, or a fuel cell.
  • Any other device—like a radio, battery, battery charger, USB charger, or cigarette plug—can be put on any port.
  • It’s helpful to start by putting these other devices on ports 1, 2, 5, or 6 first, but this is not required.
  • If you happen to plug a power source or device into an inappropriate port, the Nerv Centr Squad Power Manager (SPM-622) will tell you were to move it—again you won’t hurt anything by trying.
If you still need additional support, or additional training, please contact your Galvion sales representative or our Customer Care team at customercare@galvion.com.
WHY IS THE NERV CENTR ADAPTIVE BATTERY CHARGER FASTER THAN OTHER CHARGERS?
Most older military chargers only have one or two actual charge circuits, with a switch that moves these from bay to bay, meaning that they are really only capable of charging one or two batteries at a time. The Nerv Centr Adaptive Battery Charger has eight battery chargers, so it can usually charge all your batteries at the same time.
WHY SHOULD I CARE ABOUT THE NERV CENTR ADAPTIVE BATTERY CHARGER’S EFFICIENCY?
When using a battery charger in a forward position, the power going into the charger is usually coming from a generator. The most common chargers in use today operate at about 50% efficiency—which means that for every gallon of fuel you use to put electricity into your batteries, another gallon is wasted making heat. The Nerv Centr Adaptive Battery Charger runs at 90% efficiency, so much less fuel is used making waste heat. Less fuel means fewer convoys, which means fewer casualties.
HOW DO I UPDATE THE NERV CENTR SHAREPACK'S FIRMWARE?
The Nerv Centr SharePack supports in-field software updates through a connection to a PC via USB. A host interface application designed and developed to be an intuitive and self-explanatory product is used to execute the Nerv Centr SharePack field firmware updates. For instructions, please refer to your Nerv Centr SharePack user guide.
HOW DO I UPGRADE THE SOFTWARE FOR MY NERV CENTR BATTERY OR POWER MANAGER?
To automatically improve system performance and implement new features, Galvion routinely releases software updates for the Nerv Centr SharePack Power Management System, Nerv Centr Squad Power Manager (formerly Protonex’s SPM-622), and Nerv Centr Adaptive Battery Charger (formerly Protonex’s ABC-812), and the Nerv Centr Individual Power Manager. We recommend that you check for software updates about twice a year, to ensure your system is up to date. The latest files are available on the Software Updates page.
